Hymn Text

Lord, keep Thy servant humble;
Let not the devil’s pride
Mislead my foot to stumble
Or from Thee turn aside.
Lord, make me know my nature:
Thou madest me from dust.
Pride threatens me with danger,
But Jesus, Thee I trust.

God laid the earth’s foundation
Before I came to be
And by His declaration
Set limits for the sea.
“Canst thou perform such wonders?”
He asks who sits on high.
I tremble at His thunders.
Behold, how small am I!

And yet my flesh would cherish
Man’s empty flattery,
And it would rather perish
Than ever lowly be.
How soon I am inflated
With vainglory of men,
Who will like grass be faded
And turn to dust again.

But Jesus shows me clearly
That He thought it no loss
To stoop down and be near me
And bow beneath a cross.
He called it exaltation
To condescend to me,
To win for me salvation
By His humility.

Give me a humble spirit
To take the lowest place.
Lord, do not let me fear it;
Remind me of Thy grace.
I know Thou wilt embrace me
And down to me wilt bend
And rather than debase me,
Say, “Move up higher friend!”

So let my boast be only
In Thee, by whom I’m named.
Make me to praise Thee boldly
And never be ashamed.
And let me not be haughty
Or think I am my own.
O Jesus, Thou hast bought me,
And I am Thine alone.
